The Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Daddy-O (Vernon Winslow), announced a gospel song, “Down By The Riverside,” in memory of “Papa” Celestin. Thomas took the vocals, with Albert Fernandez Walters playing a cup mute solo on trumpet. The next tune was “That’s A Plenty” with Sidney Brown playing a masterful string bass.

Jeanette Kimball and her piano had everyone dancing the Slow Drag to “The Tin Roof Blues” and “Don’t Get Funky (Cause Your Water’s On).” Albert Walters had a long trumpet intro to the “Bourbon Street Parade,” and then Eddie Pierson kept it going with long slides on his trombone.

“Eh La Bas” featured Albert French playing the banjo. The youngsters, who had climbed into the oak trees, were shaking the limbs of the trees in time to the music and calling back to him in response.

The event ended with the band playing “The Saints,” which had the crowd up on their feet, parading, dancing and jitterbugging.

An August 1957 amateur recording of Celestin’s Tuxedo Jazz Band, fronted by Eddie Pierson, at a private wedding party in New Orleans was released on the Jazz Crusade Label as a compilation album, entitled Rare Cuts—Well Done, Vol. 2.

The band played at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Royal Orleans Hotel at Royal and St. Louis Streets on May 14, 1958.

Eddie Pierson died seven months later, on December 17, 1958. George French, Albert’s son, said, “Pierson and the band were playing music on the sidewalk in front of Generation Hall when he just fell over dead.”
